Last night I watched part 1 of an 8 part series on the history of NYC. This one looked at the years 1609 - 1825. Here are some interesting facts!
1) Brooklyn was named Kings County after King Charles of England; Queens was named after his wife and Staten Island was named Richmond County after the Duke of Richmond, the King's bastard son. That's funny because staten island is like the bastard son of NYC.
2) Alexander Hamilton helped organize the 1st bank in NYC - called Bank of New York. Not only that but he became the 1st Secretary of the Treasury at age 33. Makes me feel like I've done nothing with my life so far ;)
3) Most of us know that Alexander Hamilton died in a duel with Aaron Burr. But did you know this happened in Weehawken, NJ??? Well, Hamilton had outlawed duelling in NYC because his own son died in a duel, so they went out to Jersey...Hamilton didn't fair so well either. He's buried at Trinity Church. For the non-New Yorker, that's the little church that remained untouched, even after the WTC fell on 9/11 right next door!
Ok, enough nerdiness today. Have a nice weekend!!
